GETTING AROUND THE JUNEAU ALASKA CRUISE PORT

Navigating Juneau is a breeze, thanks to its compact size. Most attractions are within walking distance of the cruise port, making it easy to explore on foot. You can stroll along the waterfront and take in the stunning scenery and visit many shops, restaurants and more.

If you prefer not to walk, consider local transportation options like taxis or rideshares. They’re readily available and can whisk you off to your desired destination quickly. I would be cautious about ride share availability getting back to the port if you venture out far though. For those venturing further afield, public or private tour buses are a reliable option to reach popular spots such as Mendenhall Glacier. Just check the schedule ahead of time for seamless travel. I have more information about getting to the glacier below too.

Bike rentals are another fantastic option if you crave some fresh air while exploring the Juneau Alaska cruise port at your own pace. Soak up Juneau’s beauty as you pedal through its charming streets and scenic trails. Always keep an eye out for wildlife—this town is full of surprises!

HISTORY & BACKGROUND OF JUNEAU

Juneau, the capital of Alaska, has a rich and intriguing history. Founded in 1880 by gold prospectors Joe Juneau and Richard Harris, it quickly blossomed from a small mining camp into a bustling town. The discovery of gold transformed the area. By the late 1800s, thousands flocked to Juneau seeking fortune. The Gold Rush established it as an economic hub.

Interestingly, Juneau’s name honors its founder but also reflects its Tlingit roots. The indigenous community has deep ties to this land long before European settlers arrived.

As you stroll through downtown today, remnants of that gold rush era are visible in historic buildings and museums. They tell stories of perseverance and triumph against harsh Alaskan conditions. Moreover, Juneau’s strategic location made it critical during World War II for military operations in the Pacific theater. This layered past contributes to its unique character today.

EXCURSION IDEAS FOR YOUR TIME IN JUNEAU

While there is a lot to do right at Juneau’s cruise port, there’s also many more sights and activities outside the port/downtown area! Here are some great excursion ideas:

HELICOPTER TOUR TO A GLACIER

This was our original excursion type that we booked for Juneau. Unfortunately, it ended up getting cancelled the morning of due to poor weather conditions. I was super bummed about this, but honor the company for putting safety first! Although I didn’t get to do this tour, I read all about it. Some highlights include seeing aerial, breathtaking mountainous sights as you make your way to Herbert Glacier. This tour actually lands on the glacier and then you have a guided hike across the glacier… how cool is that?! This will definitely be on my list to try again for the next time I’m in Juneau!

WHALE WATCHING

So after our helicopter tour got cancelled, we had to make last minute plans on what to do instead. Thankfully, we were able to secure a very last minute spot on a Juneau whale watching tour! The tour consisted of a 30 minute shuttle to the Don D. Statter Harbor where we then hopped on our boat and ventured out into Auke Bay for about 2.5 hours of whale watching.

The boat was very nice and had indoor and outdoor areas for whale viewing. The indoor area is also heated, which is nice if it’s a chilly Alaskan day. Our tour did get to see several humpback whales which was an amazing sight. However, even more rare, we got to see some orca whales too! I highly recommend this Juneau whale watching tour! If you want to learn even more about this tour, check out my full blog post here giving you all the details on why I recommend this Juneau whale watching tour.

If you want to see whales AND the Mendenhall Glacier, some tour companies also offer an all-in-one tour, which I have linked here. There are also more options I have linked below too:

Here are some photo’s from our whale watching tour! Since it was a last minute decision, I didn’t bring my better camera lens, but was still able to get some further away whale shots!

MENDENHALL GLACIER

Consider a guided tour to Mendenhall Glacier. Just 12 miles from downtown, this iconic site offers breathtaking views and a chance to see icebergs up close. Hiking trails around the glacier cater to various skill levels, making it accessible for everyone. Kayaking is another option at the glacier that provides an unforgettable experience.

HIKING

For those who enjoy hiking, the numerous trails throughout Tongass National Forest showcase lush scenery with waterfalls and wildlife along the way. Check out Travel Juneau’s website for a list of nearby trails. Also, consider taking a guided hike through the rainforest like the option below:

MOUNT ROBERTS TRAMWAY

Rising majestically above Juneau, Mount Roberts Tramway offers breathtaking views that are hard to beat (weather dependent.) This aerial tramway whisks visitors 1,800 feet up the mountain’s face in just a few minutes. As you ascend, keep an eye out for the stunning panoramas of the lush Tongass National Forest and shimmering waterways below. At the summit, trails beckon outdoor enthusiasts to explore further. There are well-marked paths suitable for all skill levels. You might spot local wildlife like deer or even eagles soaring overhead.

There’s also a visitor center up top that features exhibits on Alaskan culture and ecology. It’s a great place to learn while soaking in panoramic vistas from observation decks. After your adventure, enjoy delicious snacks at the mountaintop café. The combination of fresh air and tasty treats makes it a perfect stop before descending back down to sea level. Tickets for the tram are around $55 per adult and can be purchased directly on their website or you can have a more immersive experience with the Tram, Trails & Ale tour linked here and below!

FISHING

Lastly, if you’re looking for something out on the water, consider taking a fishing charter trip. Here are a few highly rated options:
