WHAT IS GJAIN VALLEY?
Gjain Valley is a hidden natural wonder tucked away in the countryside of Iceland. WHERE IS GJAIN VALLEY?
Gjain Valley is located about two hours away from Reykjavik and is in the southern highlands of Iceland. You can reach the parking lot by driving to the GPS coordinates listed below. The last mile of the drive is on an F-road though, so make sure you have a 4×4 vehicle as it’s required by Icelandic law. The road itself is flat gravel, but a little bumpy and filled with pot holes.

Once parked, there is a relatively easy 10-15 minute hike to get to the valley. The path was clear from the parking lot. Once in valley, you will find the Gjarfoss waterfall and Rauoa river along with basalt columns, lush vegetation, lava caves and maybe even some magical spirits. Stories say that locals have a strong sense natural spirits here such as elves, tolls, etc. This valley is also where a Game of Thrones episode was filmed. (Season 4, episode 5.)
HOW MUCH TIME TO SPEND AT GJAIN VALLEY?
As far as time to spend at this place, one could spend anywhere from 20 minutes walking around to a few hours just taking in the beauty. It’s a great spot to bring a blanket and pack a picnic for lunch considering how calm and quant it it.

The valley has been inhabited since Viking times, with evidence of ancient settlements scattered throughout the area. Throughout the centuries, Gjain Valley has served as a gathering place for locals and travelers alike. Its lush green meadows and crystal-clear streams have provided sustenance and solace to those passing through.. It truly feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by adventurous souls seeking a glimpse into Iceland’s past.
